Are you interested in contributing to the success of African American museums?  Do you have interest in the forward movement and excellence of the African American-focused museum field?

The Association of African American Museums is looking for members to participate in working groups that will focus on three major areas of concern, as expressed by members through the latest needs assessment.  AAAM is committed to the success of our institutions, and we need your help in creating programs and offerings that will benefit you and the field

The three major areas of concern include:

Security – including, Building, Cybersecurity & Collections

Paths to Accreditation

Traveling/Shared Exhibitions/Exhibition Collaboratives

The three working groups of approximately five members will be charged with researching, piloting, and implementing in-depth programs on these major areas of concern. Members of the focus group will draw on their expertise, developing programs (mostly digitally) and fully implementing the programs within a four-year period as part of grant funding through The Andrew W. Mellon FoundationThe grant includes funds for each group’s use for research and costs of creating the programs.

All participants will receive an annual stipend, and a modest travel and hotel allowance for an in person convening at the Association of African American Museums conferencestarting in Miami, Florida, August 10 – 12, 2022.

Requirements for participants:

Each group will be encouraged to form a cohesive unit and all groups will be part of a larger community of practice, sharing their own research, learning, issues, and challenges with each other via digital means and through AAAM’s in-person conferences.  A goal will be to establish a network and community of practice that can continue after the grant period is over while increasing the knowledge and skills base of working group members and their institutions.

This is a multi-year commitment with bi-monthly meetings required (remotely) with 1-2 in person meetings a year within the four-year grant period.
